AI answer engines now sit between your buyers and your website. People ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews "what's the best [category]?" and act on the answer — often without clicking a single link. If those engines don't name you, you're invisible to that buyer, even if you rank #1 on classic Google.
A whole category of tools has appeared to measure this: AI visibility tools, also called AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) or GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) trackers. This is an honest field guide to the real ones in 2026 — what they cost, which engines they actually cover, and who each fits.
One disclosure up front: MentionPop is our product, so we're on this list. We've tried to be fair — we name where competitors genuinely win, and we tell you when we're not the right pick. If you only want the neutral head-to-heads, jump to our comparison pages.
What these tools actually do (three jobs)
Most "AI visibility" tools do one or more of three jobs. Knowing which you need saves money:
- Measure — track prompts, mentions and citations across engines over time. (Most tools, including MentionPop.)
- Diagnose — explain why you're not cited (crawler access, missing schema, weak third-party sources) and what to fix.
- Fix / automate — generate or optimize content, or run outreach, on your behalf.
Buyers almost always need measurement first: you can't fix what you can't see. Be skeptical of tools that jump to "we'll fix it" without showing you honest evidence of the current state.
How to choose
- Engines that match your buyers. Don't pay for 17 engines if your customers only use ChatGPT and Google. Check whether Gemini/Claude/Perplexity are included or paid add-ons.
- Cadence. Daily tracking captures more movement and more noise; weekly sampling is calmer and cheaper. AI answers are non-deterministic, so a single check is meaningless — repetition is the point.
- Evidence. Does it keep the raw AI answer behind each number, or just show a score? A blended "visibility %" with no receipts is easy to game and hard to trust.
- Pricing model. Flat vs credit-based vs per-model add-ons. Model your real prompt volume.
- Honesty. Does the vendor admit AI answers vary, exclude failed API calls, and avoid promising guaranteed rankings? Overclaiming is a red flag.
The tools, compared
Pricing and engine coverage in this category change constantly — verify current details on each vendor's site. Figures below were checked in August 2026.
| Tool | Best for | Engines | Starting price | Notable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MentionPop | Founders, SMBs, consultants who want evidence + a done-for-you option | ChatGPT + Gemini (Google AI Overviews/snippets/PAA on Studio) | $49/mo (free check + tools, no card) | Raw answer kept as proof; one-time human audit ($199/$499) |
| Profound | Enterprises building a full AEO program | 10+ (Starter is ChatGPT-only) | $99/mo → custom (reported $2k–$5k+) | Prompt Volumes demand data; autonomous content agents |
| Rankscale | Teams wanting the most engines cheaply | 17+ on every plan | ~$20/mo (credit-based) | Widest engine coverage; sentiment + page audits |
| Otterly.AI | Budget daily monitoring | 4 core (Gemini/Claude add-ons) | $29/mo | Daily tracking, published pricing |
| Peec AI | EU marketing teams & agencies | 3 of 6 models per tier | $95/mo (no free tier) | Unlimited seats, EU/GDPR hosting, Looker Studio |
| Trakkr | Prompt-level AEO tracking | 8 surfaces | ~$100/mo | Free AEO checker; names where rivals win |
| Scrunch AI | Technical AEO fixes | 7 surfaces + site audits | ~$250/mo | Strong on crawler/technical layer |
| HubSpot AI Search Grader + AEO | A free first look | ChatGPT / AI Overviews | Free grader; ~$50/mo monitoring | Genuinely free entry; bundled in Marketing Hub |
| Semrush / Ahrefs (AI modules) | Teams already in those suites | Varies | Add-on to existing plan | Convenient if you already pay for the suite |
Quick honest take on each
- Profound — the category's enterprise leader (raised ~$155M). Best-in-class demand data and content agents, priced for enterprises. Overkill if you just want a visibility score.
- Rankscale — the lowest floor price across the most engines. If breadth (Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek…) matters most, it leads there. Credit-based pricing means you meter runs. See MentionPop vs Rankscale.
- Otterly.AI — cleanest cheap entry for daily monitoring on four core engines; Gemini and Claude are paid add-ons. See MentionPop vs Otterly.AI.
- Peec AI — polished, EU-hosted, unlimited seats — strong for agencies and marketing teams. No free tier. See MentionPop vs Peec AI.
- Trakkr / Scrunch / HubSpot / Semrush / Ahrefs — solid depending on your situation: Trakkr for prompt-level tracking, Scrunch for technical fixes, HubSpot for a free start, Semrush/Ahrefs if you already live in those suites.
- MentionPop — see below.
Where MentionPop fits (and where it doesn't)
We built MentionPop to be the evidence-first, affordable option:
- Preserved evidence — the raw AI answer sits behind every metric, so a number is auditable, not a vibe.
- Sampled observations, honestly labeled — we repeat a fixed prompt set on a weekly cadence and never promise guaranteed rankings, because AI answers are non-deterministic. We even publish our own research on how much they vary.
- Affordable + a done-for-you path — flat $49/mo (Solo) and $129/mo (Studio), a free check with no card, plus optional one-time human engagements (a $199 Action Audit and $499 Citation Sprint) for teams that would rather buy the outcome than run a dashboard.
Pick something else if: you need 10+ engines in one place (Rankscale/Profound), you specifically want daily tracking (Otterly), you're an EU agency needing unlimited seats (Peec), or you're an enterprise needing SSO/SOC 2 and demand data (Profound). We say so on each comparison page — that's the point of them.

The category is noisy and every vendor (us included) has a bias. The one thing that isn't biased is the evidence: run repeated, dated observations, keep the raw answers, and pick the tool whose engines and price match your buyers — not the one with the longest feature list.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI visibility tool?+
An AI visibility tool (also called an AEO or GEO tracker) runs your buyer-intent prompts against AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews on a schedule, records whether your brand is mentioned or cited, and shows who wins the recommendation instead. It is rank tracking for AI answers.
Which AI visibility tool is best?+
There is no single best — it depends on budget and job. Profound leads at the enterprise end, Otterly.AI and Rankscale compete on cheap entry pricing and engine breadth, Peec AI suits EU marketing teams, and MentionPop focuses on preserved evidence and affordability with an optional human audit. Match the tool to your buyers' engines and your budget.
Do I need a paid tool, or can I just check manually?+
A one-off manual check is a single draw from a non-deterministic system — it tells you almost nothing. AI answers vary by prompt wording, model, time and location, so you need repeated, dated sampling to see a real trend. That repetition is what these tools automate. You can start with a free check to see where you stand today.
